![]() ![]() The secondary literature can serve to confuse matters more, arguing over interpretation in light of other agendas. Since these texts practically never contain arguments, lack apparent structure, and don’t make their overarching purpose clear, they can be baffling and frustrating on first reading. The rest were collected and curated by his executors. He organized some of his remarks ( The Big Typescript and the first third or so of Philosophical Investigations) in the hope of publishing, but was never satisfied with what he had. Apart from the Tractatus and the Blue and Brown Books, every text we have of his was posthumously collected out of notebooks or unpublished typescripts. ![]() I think there are at least two reasons for this.įirst, no single text of his lays out this thought in an accessible or systematic manner. Wittgenstein’s name is recognizable then, but the content of his thought can be a mystery. But he himself rarely appears on syllabi outside of introductory surveys. He’s a name that lurks in the background, popping up in introductions, in comparative studies, in his unspoken influence on recent thinkers, or in the explicit rejection of what he’s supposed to represent. Strangely enough, however, I’ve only ever had one week of reading for one class where Wittgenstein was a set reading. It’s one of those strange things where a system of thought and the personality behind it combine such that reading him becomes a matter of compulsion. ![]() ![]() If you’ve met me, you probably know I enjoy reading, writing, and talking about Ludwig Wittgenstein. ![]() ![]() Now featuring a conversation guide, 100 real-life examples of hard things tackled by other young people, and stories of young men and women who have taken the book’s charge to heart, Do Hard Things will inspire a new generation of rebelutionaries. ![]() ![]() This rallying cry from the heart of revolution already in progress challenges you to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today. Undaunted, Diamandis found inspiration in the golden age of aviation. In the 1990s, this idea was the stuff of science fiction. If the government wouldn't send him to space, he would create a private space flight industry himself. When he realized NASA was winding down manned space flight, he set out on one of the great entrepreneurial adventure stories of our time. The spectacle defied reason, the result of a competition dreamed up by entrepreneur Peter Diamandis, whose vision for a new race to space required small teams to do what only the world's largest governments had done beforea From the age of eight, when he watched Apollo 11 land on the Moon, Diamandis's singular goal was to get to space. If he did, he would make history as the world's first commercial astronaut. He had eighty seconds to exceed the speed of sound and begin the climb to a target no civilian pilot had ever reached. Alone in a spartan black cockpit, test pilot Mike Melvill rocketed towards space. ![]() ![]() ![]() His name was Chester, but he went by Chit, and he and his buddies had become a fixture around the bar over the past few months. I leaned over the sill, waving to one of the boys who was staring up at me. The air had a happy-go-lucky feel to it, a stir of excitement, like a street party about to spontaneously erupt. A wash of warm summer air filtered through the open window along with the sounds of horns honking, blaring music, and laughter from a gang of street kids who were smoking weed in the back alley behind the Wayfarer. Rolling her eyes, she lifted the sash and pushed it up as far as she could. “Open the window, and I’ll shake it outside.” Dust didn’t bother me, and sometimes I forgot other people had to breathe. “I can barely breathe, there’s so much dust.”Ĭhagrined, I dropped the rug to the floor and gave her a sheepish look. “Could you at least wait until I open the window to shake that thing?” Iris shot me a nasty look as I yanked the braided rug off the floor and started beating it against the wall. ![]() ![]() It’s an entertaining enough read, even though I can’t say it was one of my favorites. The plot itself is quite interesting and touches some interesting themes like corruption and racial prejudice. That said, I also admire the author for having used the Aussie words, since it makes the story more authentic. There is a glossary in the back, but still it might complicate reading the story for those who are not familiar with the words. I like it when local knowledge shows in a story, although I do have to admit that the amount of Australian slang used in the story did slow down the pace considerably. The promise of a proper crime story set in the middle of Australia convinced me straight away, and I think the setting is what I ended up liking most of this novel by Peter Temple. ![]() When I saw a copy of The Broken Shore on the hostel shelves, I knew I had to pick it up.
